  King Albert Park

A place that holds many of my childhood memories
I just learnt that King Albert Park is closing down. And that includes everything in that building. That age-old McDonald's that existed ever since forever. It was my favourite memory, or maybe only memory, from my childhood.

My father would drive the family there from our house. The old car that is of the palest green and stands out so distinctly on the road. The type of car that requires rolling down of the window, literally. Pretty nostalgic. I would sit at the back seat, seat belt unbuckled (Never had that habit), asking if we can head to KAP's McDonald's for brunch every weekend.

When we do, I get overly excited and annoying to my sister who sits right next at me.

The place almost always fully parked. But somehow we are always lucky enough to find an empty lot to park in. When we get out, I would run up the ramp as fast as I could. Race my sister to the top of the ramp. Our parents would stroll up slowly, taking their time.

But you know how as kids, we are too eager to do everything. Too eager to reach our destination, too eager to be the first at the doors of our favourite place, too eager to grow up.

KAP has this staircase to the entrance of McDonald's, or what I would call my "Grand Staircase". Oh that's pretty funny, grand staircase to food. The staircase used to have huge plastic McDonald's mascot life-size figurines. Hamburglar, Ronald McDonald, the pink hairy thing that always has its hair in a ponytail and that looks like pompoms (Okay, you will better know them as The Fry Kids). My mum would whip out her camera and take a photo of me and my sister by the sides of Grimace or Birdie with me smiling like a crazy idiot and my sister just either smiling too or reluctantly posing.

I still have photos of it but I have no clue where I kept them. I have photos in like 3 different places and it's almost twelve midnight so let me skip the hassle.

The glass doors are always too heavy for me to push indoors. But my dad would always lend me a hand. I would grab a seat almost anywhere on the second floor. I love sitting on the top floor, hated the first. I have no reason for that.

Also, I would always head down to order food with my mother, while my dad tended the table for us. Even though I have no strength to carry the tray in any way. Then I would head up the stairs to the top floor one jump at a time. My mum takes a while to balance her way up. Jumping up is the slowest way I could move. That's just the me when I'm young and innocent.

After lunch we would go to Beauty World and grocery shop at FairPrice. But that's a whole new story so I should wrap up this King Albert Park saga.

However, the McDonald's trips stopped after I started Primary School. And the magic stopped at the part when the place was so blue and the second floor has a tree that branches out with lots of parrots and swallows. And the staircase was filled with the familiar sitting down figurines. Me, still short and tiny, still bubbling with inexplicable excitement for everything.

It's definitely going to be bittersweet when King Albert Park honestly close down. It was a part of my childhood. A huge part. And a very happy one too, very, very happy one.

And that is my story with King Albert Park.
